GT750 front fork overhaul

This page will document the overhaul of the fork legs of my GT750J model.

It does not deal with installing steering head bearings, a procedure I didn't take the opportunity to document.

For now; here are some parts illustrations..

The following picture shows the components mounted on the inner fork tube of the J and K models. This fork model can be overhauled by replacement of individual parts (but new such parts for the exclusive 1972-73 variants are difficult to locate).
(Later models have another fork design where less parts were available for replacement, rather replacing whole assemblies was the policy there).

I've found a good slider bushing, pos 9 also (no picture).

Shown here is Pos 10, the piston which I was able to locate as a new part (Vintage Parts/Ohio) :

I've been able to find two NOS inner tubes #51111-31030.
These are very hard to find in this condition:

The J/K models are the only GT750's with a replacable piston part (pos 10).

I also came across a NOS 'outer tube', supplied by Brian Cutler, Melbourne (75 australian dollars).

I'm here working on grinding the clearcoat off...this part
had some shelf wear, otherwise perfectly new.

Take a peek down the tube..

Here is the fork maintenance information available from the Suzuki GT750 Service Manual:

2000-09-28: I now have one of the fork assemblies together. You need a snap ring plier (for pos 16 and 13) and a tube of suitable dimension when installing a new oil seal. All other parts can be removed/assembled by hand. The tricky part is getting the assembly together with the new oil seal.

A suitable tube (inner diameter slightly wider than outer diameter of inner tube..and with ample length) is needed for pressing/hammering.. the seal in place. There seem to exist dedicated tools for this as well ('seal driver').

Aftermarket oil seals are available that replace pos 18-19 (or 20-17) with a single component:
