Suzuki GT750 engine - Illustration of clutch drum indentations and bearing condition

This page illustrates clutch components of my GT750J.

The clutch drum has indentations caused by clutch plates having hammered against the alloy surface, the dents caused the clutch plates to become trapped causing some clutch drag even with the clutch lever pressed.
I will try to even out the worst dents and hope for a smoother clutch operation.

Also illustrated is the clutch drum bearing. This is the early type consisting of a steel bushing with inner bronze bushing, and a spacer. I will try replacing the bushing first since the spacer is both difficult to find and expensive.
The reason for replacement is that I suspect that a vibration I sense at low engine revs is caused by the heavy clutch assembly coming into vibration due to wear in this bushing. I have yet to see if this is the cause but I hope so..

Stonehenge ? No, the GT750 clutch basket. This shows the indentations caused by clutch plates hammering against the side walls. This causes the plates to become trapped in some cases, causing clutch drag.

Broken clutch drum metal band found at the bottom of the engine case...:-(
It has been cut to pieces by the primary drive gear..

This shows indentations in more detail. It is probably possible to smooth out the most severe dents.

Clutch plates become trapped in the dented areas and does not as easily slide sideways when released. The bottom plate was broken into three pieces probably from having been bent when trapped in the dented area.

Clutch drum bearing surface is perfectly OK.

This is the 21250-31000 BUSHING which i'll replace. This shows the inner bronze bushing part of this component
That bronze material is the most likely place for wear.

The 09180-25034 SPACER shows only slight wear. This part is discontinued and difficult/expensive to find.
A swedish dealer asks a sum comparable to USD 90 for one.

This shows the bushing and spacer. I'll yet have to see if replacing the bushing will be sufficient.

The Casio QV-8000SX was used to illustrate the parts. It can capture photos as close as the front lens. Plugs into computer USB port for quick download/web publishing.

Replacement clutch drum !

2000-11-09:
I have been able to find a better clutch drum from a donor engine, this one looks excellent with the metal band still intact !
